WHAT IS ACNE AND PIMPLE
Pimples and Acne are related with each other significantly but it should be known that one cannot be confused or replaced by the other. Acne is a skin disease or the skin condition whereas pimple is one of the symptoms of acne.
Acne is also known as acne vulgaris is sebum, skin cells and hair follicles bunch together to form a plug, and when this plug gets infected by bacteria, it will result in swelling. It can appear on the face, neck, shoulders, chest and back. Acne vulgaris affects the oil glands of the skin. The secretions appear to be more tenacious than in normal controls. Acne can be a result of genetic factors. It is a hereditary disease, but on the other hand hormonal imbalance plays a triggering role for worsening of acne. Adolescence is the time when the teenager is affected with acne. The peak is when they enter puberty and many are improved a few years later except for those who have a genetic trait, in which case it can take 5 or 10 years before substantial relief is noticed.A pimple is created when the skin pores suffer blockage on account of dead skin cells being held back by sebum. Pimples are red, inflamed and infected plugged oil glands, sometimes filled with pus. The bacterial growths inside the clogged pores are the reasons for its red colour and eventually the white fluid accumulate on the surface. A case of severe acne will almost always lead to the formation of pimples. Pimples are for the most part never caused by the hereditary components. Figure 1 and 2 show the product picture.
SYMPTOM OF ACNE VULGARIS
Acne signs and symptoms vary depending on the severity of the skin condition:
• Whiteheads (closed plugged pores)
• Blackheads (open plugged pores)
• Small red, tender bumps (papules)
• Pimples (pustules), which are papules with pus at their tips
• Large, solid, painful lumps beneath the surface of the skin (nodules)
• Painful, pus-filled lumps beneath the surface of the skin (cystic lesions
SETBACKS OF HAVING PIMPLES
This disadvantage is known to occur in social life. When attending an event where socializing with people is requires, it would really destroy the self-confident and self-esteem when acne being the major problem and causing more attention to others.
Stress: It’s obvious that acne will give out many disadvantages as far as the social life is concerned. However, the personal life can also be impacted by the skin condition. Failure in the social life would often bring sense of inferiority and stress into the mind.
Health: When the stress gets very high, the overall health will be undermined. Lack of sleep due to stresses will cause pressure to mind and body. This will lead to many health problem and depression.
Acne occurs when the hair follicles (tiny holes in your skin that an individual hair grows out of) become blocked with oil and dead skin cells. Hair follicles are connected to sebaceous glands. These glands produce an oily substance called sebum to lubricate the hair and the skin to stop it drying out.
In acne, the glands begin to produce an excess amount of sebum. Acne develops when the pores in the skin get clogged with sebum, which is a type of oil produced in the skin. The excess sebum, together with dead skin cells can build up in the hair follicles and form together as a soft plug.
If the excess oil and dead skin cells clog the pore and block the opening of the pore, the follicle wall will bulge outwards, creating a whitehead. Because the pore closes, dermatologists call this type of acne a “closed comedo.” Alternatively, the plugged follicle may be open to the surface and may darken, causing a blackhead. Dermatologist may call a blackhead an “open comedo”
The excess oil also creates an environment where bacteria Propionibacterium (P. acnes) can thrive. As the bacteria multiply deep within the follicles in a clogged pore, the plugged follicles become infected, triggering inflammation. Inflammation is what causes a pimple to look red, hot, and swollen. It is called as papule.
When bacteria invade deeper layers of the skin, blood white cells migrate to attack them. Dead blood white cells and bacteria form pus, and a painful pimple (or pustule) appears. When the pustule heals, it often leaves a long-lasting scar.
When inflammation reaches deep into the skin, an acne cyst forms, resulting in the most severe form of acne that is very painful and tend to leave permanent scarring even after it heals
BIO ACTIVES IN PIMPLES CREAM
Tea tree oil: have been found to have antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. Tea tree oil is mainly comprised of terpene hydrocarbons. Furthermore, tea tree oil is made up of over 100 components that aid in its antimicrobial and antioxidant capabilities. Some of these components include monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, and other alcohol derivatives. The over activation of P. acnes results in the formation of inflammatory responses visible on the surface of the skin. The hydrocarbons from the tea tree oil gather in the membrane lipid bilayer of the target P. acnes. The binding of the hydrocarbons to the membrane of the P. acnes disrupts the structure and function of the target P. acnes membrane. The altered state of the P. acnes membrane results in the altered movement of protons and membranes crossing the membrane, thus disrupting the internal homeostasis and the proper function of the membrane proteins. Overall, after coming into contact with the components of the tea tree oil, the P. acnes cells lose their intracellular material causing the inability to maintain internal homeostasis, and their respiration is inhibited. Contacts with the components of the tea tree oil inhibit the proper functioning of the P. acnes cells.
Liquorice: is anti-inflammatory in nature and is very useful in balancing out the hormonal levels in a woman’s body especially oestrogen. Oestrogen is the hormone responsible for the acne outbreak in women. Liquorice extract is obtained from the root of glycyrrhiza glabra. The main component of the hydrophobic fraction of liquorice is glabridin. Glabridin has been shown to prevent UVB-induced pigmentation and to inhibit tyrosinase activity, superoxide anion production and cyclo-oxygenase activity. This suggests an influence of glabridin extract on both melanogenesis and inflammation of the skin. Other active agents of liquorice extracts include liquiritin and isoliquertin. Liquiritin is a glycoside containing flavonoid that induces skin lightening by dispersing melanin. Flavonoids are natural plant polyphenols found in leaves, bark and flowers. It have been identified that liquorice contain benzo-γ-pyran derivates comprised of phenolic and pyran rings. These polyphenolic compounds are known to have anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antioxidant and anticarcinogenic properties. Flavonoids may have hypo pigmenting capabilities by directly inhibiting tyrosinase activity at distal portions of the melanogenic pathway. Liquorice extracts also influence pigmentation by removing epidermal melanin, inhibiting the biosynthesis of melanin and inhibiting the activity of tyrosinase in a dose-dependent manner. Liquorice extract has been tested in the treatment of melasma with good results and very mild irritation.
Aloe vera: contains 75 potentially active constituents: vitamins, enzymes, minerals, sugars, lignin, saponins, salicylic acids and amino acids. Aloe vera has a protective effect against radiation damaging the skin. Mucopolysaccharides help in binding moisture into the skin. Aloe stimulates fibroblast which produces the collagen and elastin fibers making the skin more elastic and less wrinkled. It also has cohesive effects on the superficial flaking epidermal cells by sticking them together, which softens the skin. The amino acids also soften hardened skin cells and zinc acts as an astringent to tighten pores. Its moisturizing effects aids in treatment of dry skin and decreases appearance of fine wrinkle and decreases erythema.
