Flavonoids may have hypo pigmenting capabilities by directly inhibiting tyrosinase activity at distal portions of the melanogenic pathway. Liquorice extracts also influence pigmentation by removing epidermal melanin, inhibiting the biosynthesis of melanin and inhibiting the activity of tyrosinase in a dose-dependent manner. Liquorice extract has been tested in the treatment of melasma with good results and very mild irritation.
