We are now facing the East coast monsoon. Along with this rough weather, we are also expecting to face a new risk of a dengue outbreak. Dengue fever is a common mosquito-borne disease especially in many tropical and subtropical countries during raining season. Stagnant water from trashes, open containers, derelict sites are scattered in urban areas and they are the ideal breeding ground for Aedes aegypti.

There are five dengue serotypes viruses that have been reported responsible for transmitting dengue fever which are DENV-1, -2, -3, -4 and -5. A person can be infected as many as five times, each with different serotypes. Apparently, the present study has found that cases of DENV-2 had a higher proportion of severe dengue among other serotypes.

For most people who contract it the first time around, dengue fever is a relatively non-serious disease. However, a repeated and subsequent infection by the virus unleashes a vicious and potentially fatal illness. That’s why there are some people with dengue fever go on to develop dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF), severe and fatal form of the disease. It also has to do with the person’s immune system. A person with a compromised immune system will have a higher risk of developing an HDF.

The key signs of HDF include severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting (often with blood in it), a marked change in temperature (from fever to hypothermia), hemorrhagic manifestation (bleeding gums, nose, back stool, skin bruises, etc.), and a change in mental status (irritability, confusion).

Did you know that Aedes aegypti is a day biting mosquito?? Yes, they are most active during daylight, approximately two hours after sunrise and several hours before sunset. So it is best for us to stay indoors during this time or wear more protective clothing to avoid the risk of contracting dengue fever. DENPRO which is an anti-dengue formulation by Dr Nabisar can be incorporated into our daily protection strategy against dengue viral infection to provide protection against dengue viral infection while also relieving the symptoms of dengue.
